Scales & Tales | An Ethical Herping Walk in Matheran

2250
Duration
1 day

Description

Most people think the forest goes to sleep at night. The truth is, that's when an entirely different world wakes up. As the sun sets over Matheran, we'll take a slow walk through the forest, guided by our torches and curiosity. Every rustle in the leaves, every call in the distance, and every glimmer on the forest floor could lead us to one of its incredible nocturnal residents.

From brilliantly camouflaged frogs and geckos to snakes, spiders, insects, and other fascinating creatures, we'll spend the evening learning about the remarkable wildlife that thrives after dark. Led by experienced naturalists, this isn't just about spotting animals—it's about understanding their behaviour, appreciating their role in the ecosystem, and experiencing the forest in a completely different light.

Whether you're a wildlife enthusiast, a curious beginner, or simply looking to experience nature beyond the usual trails, this walk promises an evening of discovery, learning, and unforgettable encounters.

Itinerary

11:45 pm: Board the 9:58 pm Khopoli (Fast) local from CSMT. Can’t make it from CSMT? No stress—hop on from wherever and meet the Vagabond team at the Shelu station ticket counter at 11:45 pm. That’s where the adventure (and a quick round of intros) kicks off.

12:00 am: We jump into our pre-booked cabs and head towards Matheran, the trailhead to our night in the wild.

12:30 am: A quick briefing, and we’re off. The forest walk begins—flashlights on, senses heightened, and eyes peeled for the incredible creatures that call these forests their home after dark.

1:30 am: Guided by our naturalist, we continue exploring the forests of Matheran at an unhurried pace, stopping whenever the forest reveals one of its hidden residents. From brilliantly camouflaged frogs and geckos to snakes, spiders, insects, and other nocturnal wildlife, every step offers the possibility of a fascinating new encounter. Along the way, we'll learn about their behaviour, adaptations, and the vital role they play in the ecosystem.

3:30 am: We pause for a well-earned break, sharing stories from the trail, discussing our favourite sightings, and enjoying a few light-hearted games before heading back into the forest. With the night still young, there may be a few more surprises waiting to be discovered.

5:30 am: As the first light begins filtering through the forest canopy, the nocturnal world slowly gives way to the morning chorus. Watch the forest transform as birds begin to stir and the landscape wakes up around us.

6:00 am: Time to head back. We begin our walk out through the forest, take our cabs back to Neral, and carry home a newfound appreciation for the hidden life that thrives after sunset.

7:00 am: Back in Neral, and straight to breakfast. Hot food. Full hearts. Slightly sore feet. Perfect combo.

8:00 am: Final hugs, group selfies, and we board the train back home. Sleepy heads, happy memories, and maybe a few new wildlife buddies.

Things to Carry/Wear

Let’s not be the person who forgot their flashlight or showed up in flip-flops. Here’s your go-to list, Vagabond-style:

  • Trekking/Sturdy shoes: Good grip goes a long way on forest trails.
  • Headlamp or torch: VERY essential for the night walk. A headlamp with a red-light mode is a bonus.
  • Water bottle: Stay hydrated throughout the trail.
  • Packed dinner: Please carry a dinner that won't spoil easily, or have dinner before joining us.
  • Full-sleeve clothing & full-length pants: Comfortable, breathable clothing helps protect against insects and scratches from vegetation.
  • Rain jacket/poncho (during monsoon): Because the weather likes to keep things interesting.
  • Snacks (optional): Breakfast is on us, but feel free to bring something for those midnight hunger pangs.
  • Camera or smartphone: If you'd like to capture the experience. Flash photography is discouraged to avoid disturbing wildlife.
  • Personal medications: If you require any, please carry them with you.
Important Notes
  • Meet your Vagabond Experience Manager at the Shelu station ticket counter at 11:45 pm. Please DO NOT miss the 9:58 pm Khopoli Fast from CSMT station. Feel free to board this train from any convenient station along the route, but if you miss this train, you will NOT be able to join us.
  • Gather at the Shelu station ticket counter by 11:45 pm. Please plan your journey accordingly.
  • Please eat or carry a packed dinner before joining us. Once we begin the trail, there will be no food stalls or eateries available.
  • This is a guided nocturnal wildlife trail, not a trek. We will spend the night walking through the forests of Matheran at a slow, observational pace in search of nocturnal wildlife.
  • Please wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear with good grip. Avoid slippers, sandals, or open footwear.
  • This experience is designed around observing wildlife in its natural habitat. Please maintain silence, stay with the group, and follow the instructions of the naturalist and Experience Managers at all times.
  • For the safety of both participants and wildlife, do not attempt to touch, handle, or disturb any animals. Flash photography should be avoided unless specifically permitted by the naturalist.
  • This experience is suitable for anyone with a curiosity about nature and wildlife. Whether you're a first-time herper or an experienced wildlife enthusiast, everyone is welcome.
  • Since we will be travelling from Matheran to Neral in the morning, be prepared for delays due to the weekend tourist rush. We appreciate your patience and understanding, and we’ll ensure everyone reaches Neral as smoothly as possible.
  • A day before the event, you'll be added to a WhatsApp group with the other participants and your assigned Experience Manager. Further instructions will be shared there, and you can coordinate your travel with fellow participants. If you have any questions before then, feel free to WhatsApp us at 93218 04770.
Frequently Asked Questions
  1. What all are we likely to spot?

While we can’t guarantee spotting all these animals, they are the most commonly found ones on this herping trail from our prior experiences.

Brooke's House Gecko, Vine Snake, Bamboo Pit Viper, Deccan Ground Gecko, Bedomme’s Cat Snake, Indian Bullfrog, Leith’s Leaping Frog, Asian Common Toad, Fungoid Frog, Indian Balloon Frog, Indian Gerbil, Indian Dot Frog, Earwigs, Darkling Beetles, Moths, Asian Forest Scorpion, Wolf Spiders, Indian Giant Squirrel, Russell’s Viper, Saw-scaled Viper, Common Krait,

Bombay Night Frogs, Chequered keelback, Wolf Snake, Spiny-headed Fan-throated lizard, Amboli Bush Frog, Bombay Bubble Nest Frog, Brahminy Blindsnake, Giant Spotted Gecko, Bombay Earth snake/Shieldtail

  1. Isn't it dangerous to walk through these forests in the middle of the night?

Our walks are carefully planned and conducted with local guides and Vagabond EMs who know the route and its wildlife well. Before we begin, we'll brief you on safety protocols, trail etiquette, and how to behave around wildlife. Most importantly, we move slowly, stay together as a group, and respect the forest, significantly reducing unnecessary risks.

As with any outdoor activity in a natural environment, there are inherent risks. However, by following the instructions shared by us and maintaining a respectful distance from wildlife, we ensure the experience is as safe as it is enriching.

  1. Aren't we disturbing the wildlife while they're asleep?

Interestingly, many of the species we're hoping to observe aren't asleep at all—they're nocturnal. Frogs, geckos, snakes, spiders, insects, and several other animals become most active after sunset, especially during the monsoon.

Our approach is built around observing rather than interfering. We maintain silence, use our lights responsibly, avoid handling or disturbing wildlife, and spend only brief periods observing an animal before moving on. The goal isn't to get the perfect photograph—it's to witness these incredible creatures behaving naturally in their own habitat.

  1. How is this walk ethical and sensitive towards wildlife?

Responsible wildlife observation is at the heart of this experience. We follow a simple philosophy: leave nothing behind, take nothing away, and disturb as little as possible.

We stay on designated routes, avoid touching or handling wildlife, minimise noise, use lights responsibly, and never alter an animal's behaviour for a better view or photograph. If an animal shows signs of stress, we move away immediately.

This experience is designed to build appreciation and understanding of the incredible biodiversity of the Western Ghats while ensuring the wellbeing of the wildlife always comes first.

  1. Why are we travelling all the way to Matheran? What's so special about this forest?

Matheran lies within the northern Western Ghats—one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. Its evergreen forests, unique elevation, and monsoon climate create ideal conditions for a remarkable variety of amphibians, reptiles, insects, spiders, and other nocturnal wildlife, many of which are endemic to this region.

Being relatively less disturbed than forests closer to the city also makes it one of the best places near Mumbai to experience the hidden world that comes alive after dark.

  1. Is it legal to enter this forest at night?

Yes. We don't venture into the forest blindly. Every walk is accompanied by a local villager who knows the area intimately, and our team conducts a recce before each event to plan the route based on current conditions. We ensure that the route avoids any restricted or sensitive areas and is suitable for conducting the experience responsibly.

  1. What precautions are being taken to ensure this walk is safe?

Your safety, as well as the well-being of the wildlife, is our highest priority.

To ensure a safe experience:

  • We keep group size small.
  • The walk is led by Vagabond Experience Managers and local guides who are familiar with the route and its wildlife.
  • We carefully select the route based on pre-event recces and prevailing conditions.
  • A detailed safety briefing is conducted before the walk begins.
  • Participants are expected to stay with the group and follow all instructions throughout the experience.
  • Basic first-aid support is available throughout the walk.

By combining local knowledge, responsible practices, and a slow, observant approach, we're able to create an experience that is both safe and respectful to the forest.

What is an EM?
At Vagabond, we don’t do 'Trip Leaders', 'Tour Managers' or 'Trip Captains'. Every Vagabond experience is hosted by an 'Experience Manager' (AKA. EM). EMs are trained to do one job: help you have a comfortable, safe and fulfilling experience.
They're the beating heart of Vagabond. The very face and foundation of what we've been building for more than a decade.
From being highly approachable, knowing our best games and breaking the ice, to 'managing' your 'experience' in a wholesome manner, they understand the vibe. Why we do what we do.
If you're an introvert and want to join solo, don't worry. Our EMs will make sure you don't feel left out :)
Who Is This Experience Best Suited For?
  • There isn’t an age restriction on any of our experiences, everyone is welcome. However, the average Vagabond customer is anywhere between 20 – 32 years old. The experiences involve a good amount of time spent with the group. Depending on what experience you’re opting for, there could be a lot of walking and physical exertion.
  • It’s important to understand that most of our experiences include very rustic accommodation and not a luxurious means of transport. These may be basic in their facilities, but the hospitality is homely and comforting. If you’re someone who doesn’t like compromising on your comforts while travelling, this experience may not be very enjoyable.
  • Most of our trips have a healthy number of solo travellers. We encourage you to join us solo, especially if you’re tired of waiting on your friends. We promise you’ll return with many more.
  • We try our best to be responsible travellers. Everyone is welcome to explore with us, but we pay utmost importance to cleanliness on all our experiences. We encourage you to #LeaveNoTrace behind while you discover the beauty of the outdoors.
  • It’s important to understand that in a limited amount of time, only a limited amount of experiences can be had. We like to cover a few places in-depth rather than just ticking off a long list of things-to-do and places-to-go. However, if you are that kind of traveller, on almost all trips you can feel free to wander by yourself to places of your interest.
  • At a Vagabond Experience, it’s important to stay open-minded and positive when things don’t go as per plan. The essence of travelling in a group is being able to help each other out when in need. The weather could go bad, and plans could get altered. In such situations, we urge you to have faith in your group leader to make the most informed decision for the group.
Who Choose Vagabond
  • Years of experience: We’ve been leading trips around the country since 2014. Our time in this field has helped us learn things about places and people that would not be possible without the amount of experience we have. This knowledge about the destination contributes to a more wholesome and enriching group experience.
  • Footfall: Since our inception, we’ve led more than 4,500 people on treks, backpacking trips, camps, and outdoor experiences. Be rest assured, we’ve dealt with all kinds of people.
  • Safety first: Given the time we’ve spent in the travel field, we know and believe in the importance of safety. All our experience managers are first-aid certified, and carry a well-equipped first-aid kit on every trip.
  • Solo / female traveller friendly: Over the years we have noticed a trend in the increasing number of solo and female travellers on our trips. Many of our trips end up having a good amount of solo female travellers.
  • Group size: We’ve come to realize that taking large groups of people compromises on an intimate inter-personal experience. Thus, our trips are led with a fairly small group of travellers who find it easier to get to know each other over the course of the trip.
  • No discrimination: At Vagabond, we believe that your age, social class, gender or sexual orientation shouldn’t determine if you’re allowed on a trip or not. Anyone and everyone should feel safe and welcome to experience and explore new places.
  • Flexible itinerary: On a Vagabond experience, you’re free to stray away from our scheduled itinerary and explore the place on your own. You do you. We’re not your travel guides. We’re here to facilitate a better understanding of the location and help you experience it in your own comfort zone.
  • Mindfulness to nature: Over the years, we’ve seen the places we visit turn filthier and less pristine. We don’t want to contribute to that any further. At a Vagabond experience, we encourage you to reduce your waste and leave the place cleaner than it was. Check out #LeaveNoTrace
  • In-depth research: We're not a tour & travel agency. Every experience we offer you has been researched and experienced first-hand by our core members. We visit the locations ourselves and curate an experience that we believe to be in sync with our ideologies.
